Saying “thank you” has and will always be much appreciated in society, however the expression loses its values when expressed digitally. We live in a world where “I miss you” is now an acronym (IMU), and our love is expressed through emojis. Still, nothing is more appreciated and classy than a handwritten note on good stationery paper.
Both experts in their own field, John Dempsey, a talented engraver, and George Carroll, a savvy businessman created Dempsey & Carroll over 130 years ago. The purpose of the stationary and engraving business was to not only provide customers with luxury writing papers, but to also act as an aid on etiquette and proper decorum in a medley of social settings.
The legendary Dempsey & Carroll team educated the Gents Among Men staff on which social occasions are required for sending a thank you cards, and ones that are not necessarily imperative.
Etiquette requires you to send a thank-you note in the following situations:
- Wedding gifts
- Bridal shower and baby shower gifts
- Holiday, birthday, Bar/Bat mitzvah, graduation, and housewarming gifts
- Sympathy letters, flowers, mass cards, or donations made in the deceased’s name
When a Thank-you notes isn’t required but it is still a nice gesture:
- When a host has treated you to a cocktail party, dinner, or concert
- After a job interview
-
Anytime you feel particularly indebted to someone

Sending a hand written thank you note after a job interview one of the reasons I have the job I have now. Many people do not do this, so it is a way to stand out from the crowd.
We agree with you, many people do not do this in today’s society. A handwritten note are timeless and so rare but it really does separate you from the pack.
