First, a button up shirt by definition is called a “button up shirt;” a button up shirt is only sometimes a button down shirt: a button down shirt is a button up shirt with buttons for the collar to be buttoned down, hence the name, and a common misconception to intertwine the two to mean the same thing. A button up shirt, though, is the starting point of describing the cloth and structure used to make a shirt style: oxford, poplin, terry cloth, twill, etc. If you aren’t sure which kind you are wearing, simply smile and say “agreed, I love this button up shirt. Thank you for the compliment”. Until then, keep checking the Gents site for further delving into button up shirting posts. We will be focusing on one style detail at a time, so don’t worry about bringing pen and paper.
